Jay Shah Elected as a New Chairperson of ICC International Cricket Council
Jay Shah has been unanimously elected as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Currently serving as the Honorary Secretary of the BCCI since October 2019 and the Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, Shah will take on this prestigious role starting December 1, 2024.
Shah was the only candidate for the position after the current Chair, Greg Barclay, chose not to seek a third term. In his response to the election, Shah expressed his excitement about growing the global appeal of cricket, especially with the sport’s upcoming inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics, which he sees as a game-changing opportunity for cricket’s development.
“I’m truly honored by the nomination to become Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said.
“I look forward to collaborating closely with the ICC team and our member nations to globalize the sport even further. Cricket is at a crucial crossroads, where we need to balance multiple formats, adopt cutting-edge technologies, and introduce our flagship events to new markets. Our mission is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever.”
He added, “While we’ll build on what we’ve learned, we must also welcome fresh ideas and innovation to take cricket to new heights globally. The inclusion of cricket in the LA 2028 Olympics is a milestone that will accelerate the sport’s growth, and I am confident it will propel cricket forward like never before.”
Shah’s election signals an exciting new chapter for the ICC as it continues to expand cricket’s global footprint and evolve on the world stage.
